Death wobble. Holy crap!
« on: August 26, 2015, 09:11:07 AM »
On my project 87 XJ , totally stock, that I have done nothing to except fix the rusted floors and fix the electrical gremlins ( ok, that was a lot) I am having to use it as a DD for a 200 mile round trip to work because I broke my other two cars are in the shop.
Anyway, I had only driven into town and back a few times, hadn't even got into .5th gear. I was headed to Atlanta doing 60 or so when all of a sudden everything starts shaking like crazy, scared the crap out of me!
Had to slow down to 30 to get it to stop.  It has happened  3 times at speeds over 55.
Here's the dumb question, would the new parts in a lift fix that at all? (3" lift)
Also, I took front trac bar off , guess I should put that back on?

yeah man holy crap, that track bar is there for a good reason. I wouldnt drive down my driveway without one, that suspension is designed to have it.

Track bar is number one suspect in DW, and it sounds like you don't have one on at all!

Are you sure you meant track bar, not the sway bar?

This...

Without the track bar, the axles would fall completely to one side and everything would bind up.

No a lift does not cure that unless the loose worn out parts causing it

are in the lift on the control arms or drag link or track bars,

but the lift does not include ball joints and tie rod ends that are usually the main culprits.

W/o a track bar you wouldn't have gotten close to 60.  Suspects are loose bolts somewhere or worn parts.  Given that it's 28 y/o there's likely a lot of wear there.
